.com or .ae — choosing the extension for a UAE business

The choice between .com and .ae is a positioning decision with a price tag attached. Here is how the two extensions differ in cost, signal and practical constraints.

What each one signals

.com is the default a customer types and the extension most buyers check first. It says nothing about where a business is based. .ae says specifically that the business belongs to the United Arab Emirates, which is exactly what some buyers, partners and tender processes want to see.

What each one costs

Across the registrars we track, .com is one of the cheapest extensions available and .ae is one of the most expensive, with no promotional first year to soften it. The gap is structural: the generic market is fiercely competitive, the country market is not.

Search visibility

A country extension tends to concentrate relevance in its own market, while a generic extension travels. Neither ranks better in the abstract. A Dubai restaurant loses nothing by using .ae; a software product sold in forty countries does.

The usual answer

Most UAE businesses that can afford both should register both, run the business on one, and redirect the other. Which one is primary depends on where the customers are: local service businesses lead with .ae, exporters and digital products lead with .com.

What not to do

Do not split a brand across two extensions with two different sites — it divides links, confuses customers and duplicates content. Pick a primary, redirect the rest, and keep both renewals on auto-renew.
