The .si domain: Slovenia's ccTLD becomes the "super intelligence" address
For more than three decades, .si was a quiet country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) used mainly by Slovenian businesses, institutions and residents. In autumn 2026 it suddenly became one of the most talked-about domain endings in the world, as the letters "SI" took off as shorthand for super intelligence.
What is the .si domain?
.si is Slovenia's national top-level domain. According to the IANA root zone database, it is administered by ARNES, the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia, which operates the registry under the Register.si name. The domain was delegated in 1992, shortly after Slovenia's independence, and both Slovenians and foreign applicants can register .si names.
Why .si is suddenly in demand
In September 2026, US President Donald Trump said at the UN General Assembly that the United States would use the term "Super Intelligence" (SI) instead of artificial intelligence, and later signed an executive order directing federal agencies to adopt the term, as reported by France 24/AFP and TechCrunch.
Register.si told the BBC that around 44,000 .si addresses were registered in September, compared with fewer than 2,000 in August, with 11,000 registrations on 30 September alone. The registry's spokeswoman said she was cautious about attributing the entire increase to the US terminology change. Internet research firm Netcraft reported that daily .si registrations briefly outpaced .ai.
The pattern echoes the rise of .ai, Anguilla's ccTLD, which became the default address for artificial-intelligence start-ups.
